Information About Church Agencies (Way of Discipleship)

The General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM) is The United Methodist Church's global mission agency. It supports the work of local congregations, annual conferences, and the church as a whole and oversees ministries such as:

  • The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). UMCOR is a ministry of GBGM devoted to responding to natural disasters, alleviating hunger and poverty, supporting refugees and immigrants, and supporting health initiatives in impoverished nations. It relies on apportionment money and the donations and hard work of individual United Methodists and congregations.
  • United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (VIM). VIM is a ministry of GBGM that equips volunteers to serve in their communities, elsewhere in their home country, or elsewhere in the world. VIM provides a wide variety of volunteer opportunities to fit a volunteer's spiritual gifts and availability. VIM receives support from apportionment money and from congregations that commission their members as mission volunteers.

The General Board of Church and Society (GBCS) is responsible for implementing the church's Social Principles. GBCS educates United Methodists on issues of "human well-being, justice, peace, and the integrity of creation" and resources congregations that are responding to these issues as "forgiven people for whom Christ died" (see The Book of Discipline). GBCS, which has its offices in Washington, D.C., also works with elected officials to let them know the church's priorities and to encourage them to pass legislation that will have a positive impact on all of God's people.
