Sample Confirmand Covenant

I, __________ vow to prepare myself to for confirmation as a United Methodist Christian and a professing member of ____________________ Church by:
  • attending all of the scheduled confirmation classes. I will make attendance at confirmation classes a priority. If I am unable to attend because of an emergency, I will work with my confirmation leaders, parents, and mentor to review anything I missed.
  • attending worship at least three Sundays per month. When possible I will worship with the congregation where I am being confirmed. But if I am staying with a friend or family member who attends another congregation, I may worship with that congregation.
  • being active in a Christian education group or class. Throughout the duration of the Credo confirmation program I will be active in my Sunday school class or a Bible study group and/or will attend youth fellowship meetings.
  • meeting regularly with a mentor. Each week, for the duration of the Credo confirmation program, I will meet with a mentor—an adult member of the congregation with whom I will discuss what I have learned, what questions I have, my interests, and my highs and lows.
  • serving others and serving the church in a spirit of Christ’s love. As a part of the Credo confirmation program, I will complete 20 hours of service. These service hours will be completed through the ministries of the church and may include traditional service projects, leading worship as an acolyte or usher, volunteering to help with church fundraisers or community activities, or assisting with children’s ministries. I may also complete service hours through other organizations (such as a scouting group or another church in the community) with the permission of the confirmation leaders.
  • participate in at least one retreat. This may be a confirmation retreat or another retreat organized by the congregation. Getting away from routines and familiar settings provides valuable opportunities for deep spiritual reflection and an intimate connection with God and others.
  • praying daily for my fellow confirmands, for my congregation, for my family, for my school and community, for my confirmation journey, and for all of the people and situations in the world in need of healing.

After being baptized and completing the confirmation program I will have the opportunity to stand before the congregation and take the vows of confirmation as found in Baptismal Covenant I in The United Methodist Hymnal. I understand that I may choose to be confirmed or to not be confirmed and that this decision belongs to me.
